I’m not sure how I missed this one but apparently Sandboxie is now supporting Windows 64 Bit Operating Systems. You can download Sandboxie from here:

That’s great news! I hate not being able to install sandboxing software for my 64-bit clients before I leave. Any word as to how stable the current beta is?
wow thanks for letting me know
That’s great news. I was a Sandboxie user before I have moved to Windows 7 64 Bit, so it’s nice to hear that a 64 bit version is in the works.
Though I will wait for it to go out of beta before even considering to install it.
Matt I posted this in the forums over a month ago. LOL.
Nice info.
Sandboxie 3.44 final has been released!
Officially supports 64-bit platforms now.
@Dieselman – lol…I should read my own forums
It’s so busy right now, I may need to hire some help.
@ssj100 – sweet, I’m going to load mine now.
apparently it doesnt have as great protection as the 32-bit version
Mark’s right, unfortunately… From Sandboxie’s site:
“The 64-bit edition of Sandboxie is somewhat disadvantaged in terms of security compared to the 32-bit edition of Sandboxie.
The disadvantage is a result of a component present in all versions of 64-bit Windows, called Kernel Patch Protection. While the stated purpose of this component is to enhance system integrity and stability, a side effect of its operation is hindering flexibility and innovation by third-party developers.”
check out their 64-bit notes here: http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?NotesAbout64BitEdition
Of course it doesn’t Mark. Even Tzuk tells people this. It is due to the nature of patch guard on 64 bit OS’s.
I know, im just letting others know.
It still provides the strongest potential protection (in the right hands) for Windows 64-bit systems, in my opinion.
I think I will definitely use it when I move to a Windows 64-bit system in about 2-3 years time. In fact, I think my setup will be identical to what it is now, except I won’t be needing to use SuRun or KAfU, and I may use Applocker instead of SRP:
Sandboxie + LUA + KAfU + SRP + DEP + SuRun
Windows Firewall + NAT Router
Avira AntiVir Personal (on-demand)
VirtualBox (on-demand)
@myhelpfulnerd – luv the site man…nice logo.
@malwarekilla: Thanks Matt! Now if only I can get some people to visit it…
SSJ100:
Out of curiosity: Why have you chosen to stick with Windows XP even when Windows Vista/Windows 7 offer more security features and (according to Microsoft) they have less vulnerabilities than XP? I’d like to know your reasons.
Hi Carlos. Here are my reasons for sticking with Windows XP:
1. It’s cheaper to stay with XP. I don’t have to pay hundreds of dollars to upgrade.
2. Windows 7 doesn’t offer any extra functionality that I want or need.
3. Windows 7 is not significantly faster (in many objective tests, it’s actually slower than XP in many categories).
4. Windows 7 (talking about 64-bit here, as I wouldn’t buy the 32-bit version) will not theoretically be as secure as my Windows XP 32-bit – why? Simply because I use Sandboxie 32-bit (and make use of most of its tremendous protection capabilities) which provides more complete protection than the 64-bit version.
However, don’t get me wrong, I will eventually move to Windows 7 or Windows 8 when it’s released. I just don’t see the need for it at this stage. I can do everything I need to do on my current system, and lightning fast too.
Interesting.
I wonder which is more secure. 64 bit OS with less effective sandboxie vs. 32 bit OS with original sandboxie.
From a non-technical perspective I have heard the patch guard prevents many kinds of root kits. Maybe a lesser sandboxie is all that is required to maintain good security.
Slightly off topic – I’ve heard the Chrome browser “sandboxes” adobe flash. Are they using this terminology right? Can an internet browser sandbox in a similar fashion to Sandboxie?
In my opinion, a 64-bit OS would be just as secure with a LUA + SRP + Hardware DEP + Windows Firewall + on-demand scanner setup. Anything extra is just a bonus really, and potentially over-kill for the vast majority of personal computers.
