Microsoft Security Essentials Upgraded…

However…nobody seams to know what exactly what was upgraded.  Microsoft does not provide a changelog (according to the mods on their forum and ours) which really sucks imo.  The only thing I see is that it now has the date of the last scan…whoohoo…boring…anybody else out there know of any other changes/upgrades?

I had that too yesterday, i was like wtf? an update? this must be good, but i just see what you said you saw -.-

  • GakunGak

Yeah, I know, they changed the version number :-P

  • Diortem

The engine and data def versions did not change….

So Im thinking we got some cosmetic/easy of use updates. Basically all Ive been able to see is the window widened, we now see the last scan, AND when you are done scanning, you get the results of the scan in a much bigger font. I suspect there are other subtle changes, but Im going to bet nothing in the functionality really changed.

Well if there is no change log we cannot assume what changed. We can only assume what we see has changed. Until we test it out and find out what it’s detection does.

    MSSE v1.0.1961.0.

What i have seen is, that it does not update, if you havent set you windows update to automatically download and install new updates.

I had mine on “look for updates, and let me choose…”, and now i only get a pop-up about the MSSE def. update..

    That sucks

  • Diortem

Mine is setup the same way (I insist on full control of my machine), but Im not having your issue of it not updating. What OS are you on? Im on XP SP3 if that makes a difference.

  • bruce

What i have read is it has the latest virus and spyware database signature that handles file association issue after av.exe is removed. This is in relation to XP/Vista Internet Security 2010 spyware and its variants..

I wonder if they’re secretly implementing WAT into MSE??

  • Diortem

Excuse me for being a noob, but what’s wat?

  • bruce

    WAT = Windows Activation Technologies
this new anti-piracy technology from Microsoft was released globally last February 23,2010 and it replaced WGA ( windows genuine advantage ) that checks for authenticity of your windows OS.
    THis is built-in Windows 7….
Pirates now have something to work on…..

  • GakunGak

    already broken :-D

  • Derek

I think the upgrade has to do with sniffing out fake Windows versions. I installed MSE on computers for a few friends (here in Korea). They apparently had pirated Windows versions, because after this update, MSE warns them that they have fake software. It worked just fine for a few months prior to this update, and never did that before. Odd thing is, each of these machines passed the initial validation process, only to have the hammer lowered after the new install was complete.
