HiJackThis does a pretty good job on identifying malware, but a very poor job on removing it. I use hijackthis everyday to diagnose infections, and then I’ll use other applications to remove them (my favorite right now being malwarebytes anti-malware). Most malware is impervious to the hijackthis removal techniques.
The reason that I wrote this post was because Tom Ferguson said he kept trying to remove some malware using hijackthis, but the malware always reappeared after the removal process.
