PC Tools Free Antivirus Review Results – Don’t bother…

While PC Tools Internet Security and Spyware Doctor with Antivirus are truly 2 awesome anti-malware applications their free antivirus is not.

It’s now clear to me that the power of PC Tools comes from the fantastic detection and removal technology of Spyware Doctor. I downloaded the latest version of the Free antivirus from pctools.com and put it to task on my latest infected pc.

PC Tools Free Antivirus detected and removed over 40 viruses, but left everything else behind and was continuously corrupted (see screen shot below). In my test I had to re-install PC Tools Free Antivirus 2 times…on the 3rd time I halted the review.

(the image below was taken after a full scan, removal and reboot.)

If you’re looking for some good free antivirus then choose Avira AntiVir.

The antivirus on all PC Tools products is very weak, only the antispyware is half good…

  • f

Does it protect well, is the prevention good?
i know you dont test that, but i think you should

    waiting for that comodo review

    thanks

Finally you opened your eyes LOL! Will you change your av now :P
Don’t in the end SAS and MBAM have a similar detection with Spyware Doctor, if used along with a strong av? (ex. Avira+SAS or MBAM)

Well I disagree I was curious due to my paid version of mcafee running out. So i downloaded and tested first avast free and pc tools free. They both performed well and removed all the same virus’s. Avast seemed to be a bit more of a resourse hog so I chose pc tools. As for the errors and having to reinstall it I never had a problem with pc tools at all it did its job fine. I also like pc tools due to the virus definitions are not as huge and download alot quicker and the interface is less of a pain than avast and it runs quicker. Its probably not the best but not all are 100% but if you want simplicity and hate spending money for something you shouldn’t I choose Pc tools

  • mrB

Malwarebytes spybot and adaware are for that mean ol malware you say I have not met. However if things get to bad for me I got my trusty windows disk and all my files saved on my second hard drive. So I hardley miss a beat

I Tested Pc Tools Free Anti-Virus.It Gives Alot Of False Positives,And Sucks At Detecting Malware.

Had PcTools AV 5 for a long time. Windows 2000 SP4 updated, known-good working machine. Decided to download PcTools AV 6.1. Uninstalled Ver 5. Installed 6.1. Doesn’t work. ERROR, ERROR, ERROR. Followed ALL of their “online troubleshooting” uninstall, reboot, redownload, reinstall, reboot etc. etc. I have spent 4 hours on this. They need to learn how to test software. Nothing wrong with my machine. Everything else works. I know what I’m doing. Do they? Avoid. Will use something else.

Its probably because you are using windows 2000.Thats goingt to be 4 os’s old(2000,xp,vista,win7)
They may not want to build support for something few people use anymore

I enjoy reading forums and the info they contain.
For my 10 cents worth Comodo Malwarebytes and microsoft security essentials are best – the latter detected 2 x Trojans in D drive music that none of the others did. i used pctools avira spybot essent bit defender etcetc and they never really seemed to clean like they advertised. The above i feel are good value for Free programmes.
