Spybot Search & Destroy Review – Detection and Removal

by malwarekilla on November 24, 2008

I just uploaded the Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 Detection and Removal review.  Spybot’s performance was average (as I expected).  It removed almost every Rogue Anti-Malware application and zlob (fake alert) however left a lot of adware activley running (as displayed by the multiple popunders from popunder.multi-pop.com).

I still like Spybot for 1 reason:  Browser Immunization – it’s a nice free feature…sorta reminds me of Spyware Blaster…

…but…If you’re looking for a free Anti-Spyware application for detection and removal I’d just stick with SAS and MBAM.

Free application offering real time protection and other prevention features, not bad actually. Atleast the efforts of the developer/s need to be appreciated :)
But like Matt said, it’s probably fine for a 2nd option.
I think if your main suite is strong/reliable, you would probably be fine.
And… yeah i think the interface needs an upgrade :)

This program’s interface needs to be simplified and upgraded. An old look does not mean an old program, however.

For mrizos (sorry, I do not know your name):

Did you know ESET has a v4.0 NOD32 and ESS out? I do not know if you need a code to update the beta, but if you should need one, I will gladly give you one. (But let me know if it does not work!) http://www.eset.eu/download/beta

autoruns, before and after log??? or what did you have in mind?

when you test a mediocer app, do a fast scan with both MBAM and SAS as the last thing you do

generell: it would be nice to se what/if/how the realtime protection works when you click on malware file

“Agnitum Outpost Security Suite 2009″ after you are going to Finish SuperAntiSpyware Pro Nov Test 2

@3xist – OMG…funny timing on that one huh?!

Adel November 28, 2008 at 1:49 am

Thats great, thanx for the link 3xist!

Many user think that adding GUI features is useless and serves no purpose, but i think it helps in many ways.

The applications looks up to date, more professional, can help the UI look simpler or easy to understand.. etc
And if graphic enhancement helps product functionality then.. thats greaT!

Hi MATT

Do you belive this app is a rouge? I personally think it is.
Since you can’t find any history about the site/company!
And it kind of looks a bit rouge…. :o )

DO NOT DOWNLOAD UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DOING!!!

malwarekilla November 28, 2008 at 4:16 am

@Johan – it looks like it, but I don’t see any evidence yet.

^ classified by Kaspersky as not-a-virus:FraudTool.Win32.BPSSpywareRemover.s

Probably from BPS, they make a lot of junk stuff, like a lot of almost-rogue applications

Adel November 28, 2008 at 4:44 am

btw something interesting…
a lot of these rogues, may be most… always have these fancy graphics hahaha and im sure that is one reason why people fall for these applications. Probably for the below average user, a ‘beautiful’ interface means an efficient software. And the GUI is the FIRST interaction that an application makes with a user.

May be its a tip for those genuine and very efficient security products.. ‘Guys.. spend some time on your product interface too’ ;)

I looked at that site johan posted, web of trust says it’s a bad site… a roque program

Johan November 29, 2008 at 12:21 am

I KNEW IT!!! HAHA

Well i agree that the graphic looks quite fancy.
And yes that’s what most people are looking at in the first place, Unfortunately!

malwarekilla November 30, 2008 at 2:11 am

@Adel – yeah, I have to really agree here. If you see a security site with a TON of flash you can bet it’s a rogue antivirus vendor (errrmmm…I mean thief).

@lilibeth

Try Malwarebytes with a quick scan. If that doesn’t work try superantispyware, both are free from download.com. Then download Avira Antivir free to avoid getting anymore viruses. That is also available for free on download.com. Good Luck!
