Video Review of OneCare

I just got done making a video review of Microsoft’s OneCare. OneCare has recently been hailed as one of the best anti-malware solutions on the market today. See how well it performed on a highly infected PC!

The video is broken up in 3 parts. The total length of the review is 13 minutes.

Part 1: The Install

Part 2: Starting and Running OneCare

Part 3: The Conclusion – did OneCare Work?

How we tested:
We used VMware Workstation and created a Windows XP sp2 pc. Malware was installed by visiting known malicious websites (drive-by downloads). OneCare was installed and fully updated in an effort to remove the malware on the Virtual Machine.Measure of Success
I measure success in a few ways:

  1. Removed Rogue Anti-Malware
  2. Removed Trojans/Viruses
  3. Removed Pop Ups/Unders
  4. Removed Website/Search redirection
  5. Normal Port Activity

Microsoft really needs to learn how to make security programs

  • Ztech

Microsoft’s software products need to have proper security designed into them in the first place so that a secondary application (antivirus, antispyware, etc) shouldn’t even be required, or at least to a much lesser extent then the situation we see now. Why large organizations (like businesses or governments) don’t put more pressure on Microsoft to improve their products, considering the enormous amounts of money they spend using these products, is a mystery to me. In addition, tons of extra money is spent on security (ie ant-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls) and utility (ie registry cleaners, defragmentation apps, junk file removers, etc.) applications which are required to address the deficiencies in Microsoft’s operating systems. Oh, and not to mention the enormous time and effort spent by IT people to monitor and address these deficiencies hands-on. Are we all that stupid that we accept such computing environment?

Almost anything that Microsoft produces is either complete crap or has all sorts of problems. Here we have another demonstration of this. I’m not even surprised, I was willing to bet any amount of money that this OneCare product line was complete and utter rubbish, without even trying it. It’s just the same thing over and over and over and over again.

We all really need to re-examine our computing environments and ask ourselves “Do I really need to go through this crap day in and day out?” As much work, effort and money that it might take to study the issue and pursue the implementation of other OS platforms, aren’t we better off switching to another platform that remain with this unacceptable situation?

All of my expertise has come from using the IBM-PC/Compatible (as they are correctly referred to) platform an Microsoft operating systems since DOS 4.0 and Windows 3.0 (roughly 20 years now). I’ve become so darn fed up with MS in the last few years that I’ve starting looking into MAC and Linux. Let me tell you, now that I know a heck of a lot more about those platforms that I used to, that both these platforms are about 5 to 10 years more advanced that anything MS can produce.

All MS is doing is using old codes and old standards, revamping them a bit, and constantly popping newer code on top of older code. Every so often they make their GUI’s a little nicer looking, just so that the public actually thinks the product is “new and improved”. Typical gimmick that a lot of companies use (ie change the packaging).

Sorry for the long rant, but this is simply too much already and we really need to start looking elsewhere for our computing needs. We’re clearly being ripped off by MS, yet we still stick with them. This has to change.

Nice video Matt, thanks very much!
