Hey matt will firefox be in sandboxie mod if I don’t run it via kaspersky (but it is on a sandboxie list)
I can answer to your question. No, it won’t be in sandbox if you don’t run this application from this list.
KIS 2010 Sandbox feature works except I 64 bit OS’s. I have tested it myself plenty of times. I actually use CCleaner to empty out the Sandbox.
Matt mentioned that its hard to get anything past Kaspersky well I did, this happened only one time a few months ago not on KIS 2010 but on KIS 2009 while my siblings were visiting Friendster than all of a sudden a rouge antivirus installed on my Comp called Personal Antivirus but luckily I had my IE8 isolated by GesWall disabling the rouge was simple I than submitted a sample to Kaspersky hopefully now its blocked
I’m not sure I know what list you guys are talking about. When I run Firefox or IE8 in Safe Run I don’t open KIS but just right click on the browser quick launch icon and then click Safe Run.
Exactly what I do Mike.
great review matt
This MS “thing” calls PatchGuard. It disallow kernel modifications and, thus, prevents security vendors to implement full-featured products under the x64 so-called “platform”.
Which is recommended most KIS 2010 or Gdata IS 2010?
I use 64 Bit Vista so the Sandbox feature isnt a bonus.
I really like Matt’s reviews. Especially with all the security choices out there.
I’m using Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2009. Would you do a video review test so others and myself can see how well it does?
I’ve also read most of your reviews and seen most of your videos. They’re great!
But on my 2 laptops one with Vista and the other with XP DriveSentry icon in the systray disappears and I can’t get it to keep working. Any suggestions, as it seemed to be a good program for free.
Great review Matt! Congratulations!
Personaly I consider KIS 2010 perfect on protection.
Otherwise, I gave up using KIS 2 years ago because KIS was slowing down Internet browsing speed so much particulary when using Firefox.
When I uninstalled KIS and changed for another AV I could feel the difference.
@spedeboi
I’m sure around here you will find more people recommending KIS 2010 for the simple reason many more including myself use it and like it. I have also been wondering about G Data 2010 and just may give the 30 day free trial a test run. KIS is rock solid and light on my system, however the program design seems somewhat overly complicated.
@spedeboi & @Michael
I prefer Gdata 2010 over KIS 2010. KIS is much more know in the US and GData is a European (German) company and that is why I think you will get more positive reactions to KIS. GData is a fantastic program but international support is not their strong suit. If your do decide to purchase a GData license I recommend doing so from Ultimate Internet Security. Their support is top notch. I purchased direct from GData and the support is nonexistent. 5 emails and no response from the company. UIS fixed my problem even though I did not buy the license from them. Use the 30 day trial, you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks Michael. I tried both KIS and Gdata, both were light on my system. But I think I will go with KIS 2010 as well seems more complete.
Malware Research Group has recently published the results of an extensive on demand scan test with many antivirus softwares.
Here are the results:

Kaspersky got 4th position behind A-Squared, Avira and GData. Take a look!
im using Kaspersky 2010 it seems fine But my Question is do I need to still install
Returnal
Geswall
Secunia
On top of kaspersky 2010
As most of you probably know that kaspersky has got a sandbox feature now in the 2010 version so i though i dont need a
sandbox application but what i understand you can not rely on a sandbox alone as the malware is still floating free in you system
so damage is still possible even though its in a sandbox it still has rights to run and rely on the end user to know what they are doing
this was the reason for Geswall isloation choice
rather then virtulasion As correct me if im wrong but isloation is better than virtualsation for the same reason where the
malware still has rights in a virtulasied area so damage is still possible
With rentuil the drive is still vulrubale to malware right? The one returnil creates am i also right? So this defeats the object?
returnil does not proctection tatoo partion am i right? Or a Pc with a preinstalled operating system with back up partition?
web of trust brongs up returnil as unsafe website how weird?
Also will geswall and kaspersky together conflict i got a pdm keylogger could this be down to geswalll
kas was found to have a vulntbity thats allows to be disabled remotely or loacla by running a script fix was released
better to hve one hip one av virtul brwser instead of all in one prgrme
You can do similar things with Returnil indeed, but it’s not the same protection.
1. Sandboxie isolates the malware and makes it harmless immediately (= security).
2. Returnil without Sandboxie let the malware install itself and do its evil job.
Returnil will remove the malware indeed during reboot, but way too late.
In other words Returnil without Sandboxie = no protection, just good removal (= recovery, not security).
Please can you clarify if these statements are true Many thanks
I really think that Kaspersky lost it.
I mean, it’s a really good app for experts, I think it can almost block every single piece of malware out there. The problem is that don’t think it’s currently the best for normal users. IT either is too interactive or too quiet. It also noticeably slows down everything. And the interface. Oh if I hate the interface. What the hell were they thinking? I really hate how antivirus software is trying to look like some piece of art, just increasing resource usage. Where’s the old good Kav 5 and 6 look? F-Secure 2008’s look was so simple yet effective. McAfee has a clean look too. And what’s with the Sandbox? They are really making Kav very bloated. I’m not talking about resource usage, I’m talking about slowdowns. I really cannot use Kav anymore. The slowdown is just too huge. Even F-Secure seems to be lighter! (though the RAM usage is higher)
Nowadays I recommend Avira to normal customers. I’d like to recommend F-Secure too, it’s very powerful, but DeepGuard requires too much interaction for normal users in order to be truly effective. I don’t know. It seems to me that antiviruses are going in the wrong direction. All they care about is a graphical advanced GUI and just pack more and more features. I think the most important thing would be to maximize the signature and heuristic detection abilities first, then start thinking about this. Like Avira. They’re signature and heuristics are great, they just need some HIPS. Or F-secure. The Kav engine + F-Secure’s own engine is really effecive. Their HIPS (esp. in v 2009) is a real beast too. All they need is to make the HIPS smarter and to lower memory usage.
Hi, I’m currently using KIS 2010 for internet protection and Eset Anti Virus for virus protection, and I can say that I’m very please with the results. No infections since I had them installed and that was ’bout 6 mths ago. Before that I had Norton. A lot of false positives with Norton; that’s why it’s replaced.
To clear up something that Victor Hugo posted. No, Kaspersky did not get 4th position behind A-Squared, Avira and GData. From what I read, I think it’s an unbiased report. It just shows what AV applications passed its test and the results were posted alphabetically. If Kaspersky’s name starts with a “Z”, it’ll be posted last behind all the other AV programs. The report just shows that Kaspersky passed the test and that its not superior or inferior to the others.
But in my humble opinion, I think KIS 2010 along with Eset are a formidable pair to fight virus, spyware, or other unwanted intrusions into your precious computer. I can vouch for them confidently ‘coz ……..lets just I’m a seasoned “downloader”.
Hi!
First of all I want to thank Matt for all the nice reviews!
Yesterday I installed KIS 2010 to test it and I have one question regarding the KIS 2010 review part 2. Matt says that he did not get any malware past KIS. The problem is that he did not really test the behavioral part of KIS at all. By stating that the heuristics part did not recognize some of his 0-day malware links and tagged them as low-risk, Matt just told KIS to put anything it does not know about into the “untrusted” category. This means that any file not known by KIS is tagged as “untrusted” – but this was Matt’s decision, not KIS. And there are a lot of files out there KIS does not know about wich are 100% clean so it is not possible to handle any unknown file as “untrusted”. So form my point of view in his review it was Matt who decided what is malware and not KIS. To test KIS he should have run the untrusted password hijackers to see if the behavioral check catches them or not. Or do I misunderstand something?
Best regards,
Anguel
