K9 Web Protection Review

Last night I reviewed K9 Web Protection – a free web filter that’s free and easy for parents to install and use.  Check out the K9 Web Protection Review:

Here are the K9 Features that I really like:

  • 69 categories
  • no database download needed, queries web service
  • caches websites ensuring your internet access is as fast as possible
  • can force users to use safesearch
  • night guard allows parents to shutdown internet access from for example 10pm – 7 am.
  • logs tell parents if website were blocked
  • very low system requirements
  • supports IE, Safari and Firefox
  • now supports 64-bit
  • you can create a custom protection level (custom cats)
  • can block ssl based sites
  • you can block websites based on keywords in the URL
  • make your computer “bark” when a website is blocked
  • works in safemode
  • works even if you kill the process
  • uninstall requires a password
Please +1 this post if you like me :)

would someone be able to use a tool like rkill to terminate the k9 process?

  • Pingu

Hey, Matt, could you do a review on how well it protects against malicious links like you normally do with antivirus software? I think its awsome at that!

  • Ted

    Matt,

You can get an appliance with Blue Coat. It will cost you though.

A Zyxel Zywall 2 Plus with content filter. The Zywall has a killer backend. Almost enterprise quality. Free firmware updates for the life of the product.

Content filter is subscription based $ 68 year. I buy my subscription at ProAdvantage Electronic Super Store.

K9 looks as it maybe the same thing with better added controls then my router based filter, same categories as mine. I have no https filter.

I also run Untangle Server in bridge mode on my Atom 330 with their open source filter.

    @Dieselman
Just so you know there is an option to block spyware/malware sources, as well as phishing websites. Although I will agree that it isn’t a true tool to help block malware.

This free software is awesome, Will deploy on clients PC’s. Thanks Matt!

  • Ted

Why did my post get smoked? Can’t you link to items? How lame is that.

  • Ted

Sorry, there it is. iPad did not render it the first time.

  • nick

you can also do malwarebytes pro with k-9 web and that well be the best browser filler for the browser

  • Ted

    Dieselman,

In Matts video it stated that K9 used 20- 30 whatever it stated categories to block. My Bluecoat on my Zyxel blocks malware/spyware sites as does my Untangle server. I think they use the same categories for K9 as my Blucoat Zyxel, therefor I think K9 does block known malware sites.

  • Dieselman

Its blocking the terminology. Not the site.

  • Ted

No, my Zyxel Bluecoat the site. I would think the K9 would do the same.

It appears they use the words “block dangerous sites” meaning malware/spyware sites.

and here in a review ” block sites”

    http://www.pcw.co.uk/computeractive/downloads/2156612/k9-web-protection

It never lets you get to the site.

  • malwarekilla

@Ted – thanks Ted, I’ll check that out.

  • malwarekilla

@Pingu – If I had more of that precious thing called “time” I’d review every app on the planet. I’m sure it’s decent at blocking known malicious websites.

Mr Mrizos you should try the opendns.com site it is a on line service it can be configured to protect 1 to a larger number of pc there is a free and paid version, i also feel it has speed up my Internet browsing experience. finally doesn’t vista and 7 come with a Internet filtering feature

  • Ted

    @Anthony

Opendns and Bluecoat/K9 work together very closely and share database info so you get them all when you have one of them. I wonder if one owns the other?

  • Nick

Not a parent, but I use K9 to block malware along with Vipre 4. It also has a category to block adverts which is just awesome.
