Moving To MSE – My Microsoft Security Essentials Settings

I was busy last night moving all six of our family PC’s from Avira to MSE (gotta go take care of mom tonight :P ). I have to admit it’s much faster on quick scans (as compared to the beta), so fast in fact I decided to do them every night.

I’m guessing this will be one of the largest AV clouds on earth, so detection rates will most likely be sky high. Here’s how I configured my Microsoft Security Essentials.

So, here is my settings tab. On scheduled scan I’m running a scheduled quick scan every night at 2 am. All of our PC’s run 24/7 so this works best for us. I’m not really concerned about my pc since I’m using DefenseWall on it, but the wife and her aunt always seem to find trouble (usually minor though).

On Default actions I’ve chosen to just quarantine everything. I never like to remove a threat unless I’m positive it’s a threat.

My Real-time protection settings are set to defaults and so far I have NO exclusions.

On the Advanced settings I have selected “Scan removable drives”. Since my flash drive has the habit of getting infected with worms this is a must for our house.

And finally, I selected Advanced membership for the Microsoft SpyNet

    Matt,

Can we run another real time security software with MSE?

Threatfire, realtime PrevX (paid for), realtime MBAM or realtime SAS?

I’m assuming it’s o.k. to run Sandboxie and GesWall.

Some may even want to run Comodo. Maybe it’s o.k. just to run Comodo firewall without installing the realtime anti-virus.

    Hey..

If i was to run MSE, what firewall should i then use.??

Is the Microse Firewall good enough..?

    Thanks

  • Dan

    ..I mean Microsoft Firewall :-)

MS spynet, why isn’t there a no thanks option..?

i would never install a AV that dont have a interact option (or an easy way to disable it, avira has both)

i hope MS let av-comparative test this app

@JJ, not supposed to run any other real-time protection av with MSE.

  • elliotcroft

And yet AV-comparatives have just listed Microsoft as having an average detection rate. You picked the wrong time to move.

  • Dan

    @ elliotcroft

    Do you have a link..?

  • Sudaksh

elliotcroft is talkin’ about onecare i think

  • Dan

Ohh. ok.. But thats not the same..

  • elliotcroft

    It uses the same definitions.

Also when I have security essentials activated the computer goes slow and unresponsive.

  • Dan

No problem here.. MSE works great.. And no slow ups of any kind..

  • 927

it sound like “everybody” likes cos it’s new. to me it’s seems to be basic

I dont trust the government spy net from MSE. go to infowars.com for all real unfilterd news.

  • John

You’re keeping Defensewall on your own pc. Do you have MSE on it too?
Others have tried that combo and it doesn’t seem to work. Everything from slowdowns to a locked up pc.
