Please help! nothing works!

Postby jmc333 » Wed Mar 23, 2011 11:03 pm

Ok so basically all i had for protection was a super outdated version of sophos (stupid i know.) anyways a couple of days ago it caught something weird in the java temp and said it was malware, i ran SAS (full scan) it caught something and i deleted it. The next night i was on the internet when it suddenly crashed, next thing i know there's a rogue antivirus in my face, i ignored it and ran back to SAS, ran another full scan and it caught some Trojan.Gen.FakeAlert thing. I deleted that, turned off my comp and went to bed, i figured i'd deal with it tomorrow (today.) Today i boot up and nothing works, when i try and click a .exe it asks what i want to open it with, basically none of my icons work, it says my internet is deleted, and i dont know what to do. I really need help, i used to be into this kind of stuff but it's been a while and i literally have know idea what to do. Thank you very much in advanced :|

All you need to know is right in Matt's blog. You can also try doing a System Restore. SAS also has a repair option. Virus Effect Remover is another program to try.

First you could try booting into safe mode and seeing if you can run a scan in there. If that fails then take Dieselman's advice.

I like Dieselman's idea. Depending on your OS, boot into SafeMode and activate System Restore.

If that does not work you can try the "Last Known Good Configuration" line item. If that does not work you should run MBAM and SAS in Safe Mode (I would do this step whether System Restore fixes the problem or not)

Hey i'm running the Kaspersky Rescue Disk as i type this, the databases are updating atm and i had a quick question. In the tutorial Matt says to uncheck the scanning of "Hidden Startup Items" and to check the C drive, is it ok if i just have all of them checked or is there a reason he said to uncheck the scanning of the Hidden Startup Items? Also i just noticed the database has finished updating but it still says my database is obsolete? Help please? Thanks again for all the help.

update: It appears the database is corrupted,, i tried to update again but it didn't help.
p.s. im not really a computer guy and in regards to Dieselman; what exactly would a system restore do? would i lose everything on the drive? Because unfortunately i have a bunch of work stuff on the thing :/

Wow! This brings back some painful memories when my daughter had the same problem except for one thing. She still had internet connectivity so here's what I did. I happened to have Procexp.exe which is freeware available at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645 installed on her computer so I opened it up before the fake anti-virus thing fired up then right clicked on the process that didn't belong there and the fake windows that were starting to open up all closed so that bought me some time. Then I downloaded the free AVG antivirus software and installed it. It worked and cleared up a lot of stuff then scanned with malwarebytes and it found a couple of things avg didn't get such as a fake proxy. After that episode, I decided to make a bootable Kaspersky rescue disk so if it ever happens again, I'll be prepared. I did another scan with the Kaspersky rescue disk and found a ton of stuff on her computer including a few infected restore files Hopefully you can get your internet connection working again or you could burn a cd using another computer and see if you can install something that way. I'm not an expert at this but thanks to Matt, I'm learning very quickly. I hope this helps.

jmc333: System Restore is used to return from the previous state which became functional or stable, doing this will undo the programs that you installed and others.

Update on the Kasperksy Disc: besides what i mentioned above i also can't scan, i get error code 8000046, it says it failed to startup. Peale seems to be having the exact same problem as me:
peale March 22, 2011 at 5:46 am

"I’ve spent 30 minutes trying to update over and over and over the Kaspersky rescue cd.

I orginally did the cd prior to finding your page here & it wouldn’t scan – said error code 80000046 and so when I found your posts here – I redid the cd & followed your download suggestions & all to a “t”

After 30 minutes of update downloads I still get the error."
He posted that here http://remove-malware.com/antimalware/anti-malware-howto/how-to-create-and-use-a-bootable-antivirus-disc-kaspersky-rescue-edition/

Thanks again for all the replies, hopefully i can get the rescue disk to work and if not i'll try bootng in safemode and if that fails to work i guess i'll try system restore? Anyone else have other suggestions or thoughts? i'd welcome any :)
Thanks.
