Feels like Version 10 only just came out to me. So I'm hoping it's a little ways away or at least doesn't require a full on download and just an update.

I had a problem with the process responsible for displaying notifications (when malware is found) not starting after an update. I don't like the scanner that runs every time Avira Antivir Free finds something (I would like that scanner to start only when a relevant piece of malware is found, but when I used avira it even started after the eicar test file was discovered). Because at that time Avast 5 Free introduced interesting new features (and a usable interface) I switched to it. Still, Avira has better detection (and heuristics) according to av-comparatives tests (Note: The tests used Avira's heuristics on High and the detection of packed executables was disabled, maybe users should use the same settings).

More importantly what's up with putting the ASK bar in the install?

I stuck with Avira for almost two years. It protected my PC very well, but it seemed to start dragging it down a little so I switched to Avast. Avira is still a top of the line AV though.

Some of complained of its tendency to false positives. That said, I used to remove said false positives just for the heck of it. I had no adverse effects as a result on any occasion.

Me too. Avast seems to have the upper hand right now. If they did not, I would not tolerate their product. I have a lot of expectations for the limited security that I run, though it is all freeware.

They lost many users when they released ask toolbar. Now you can install without it but the harm is already done.
A fool with an antivirus tool is still a fool.
If you can't convince them, confuse them.
