Which email? Gmail vs. Hotmail

Postby shady06 » Thu Mar 03, 2011 8:04 pm

First off I apologize if this is not in the right section. I wasn't sure if I should post it in the A vs. B section or not so feel free to move it if I was wrong.

I have been using my ISPs email for awhile now, but decided that I'm going to switch to web based email. I know Yahoo is a decent option, but I've narrowed the two down to Gmail and Hotmail. So I ask, which is the better email service for the average email user in your opinion based on ease of use, integration, security, spam filtering, etc. Just curious what your opinions may be. Let me hear them and don't forget to vote! :)

*Good point Tweak, added a Neither option

I have 2 Gmail accounts, 1 Hotmail, 1 Yahoo, and one from my ISP and I prefer Gmail the best out of them, features and function make it my first choice. I love the ability to make phone calls from my Gmail account a great deal.

Due to the nature of this specific post/poll it is basically an A vs B type of comparison, there are likely some if not many that would choose neither however so your query is a bit incomplete.

I was a Gmail user but after i saw http://www.pcworld.com/article/220830/google_wants_your_face.html#tk.rss_news i got myself a Hotmail account. I need my privacy on my PC like i need it when i take a walk in the park. What if someone would note everything you do outside and inside your house? Would you like it?

I use Hotmail mainly for the same reason as virtu...I still use Gmail, but I'm trying to slowly switch to something else.

I like Hotmail's spam filter seems to let less into my inbox as well.

I use my ISP email/webmail and it works just fine. I can have up to 10 accounts, the webmail spam filter works pretty good and I use Mailwasher Pro on my desktop so I never see spam in Outlook.

Gmail all the way. I've been using it since it was in Beta. Great IMAP sync and it's all great. I didn't like Yahoo Mail at all (sorry Y! Fans) and Hotmail was kinda "meh" for me. Gmail is a great business style email. I don't even use an email client anymore on my PC or Mac. I just made a shortcut to my taskbar that launches the Gmail Webmail app and I do all of my email from there. On my iPod touch and iPad I also use Gmail's app rather than Mail. I just love Google's interface. I also use Google Calendar and Docs heavily too, but that's beside the point. The way it all stays on the cloud is perfect for me. I love it! :D

My favorite is Gmail. Imports other emails pop3, great filtering options, amazing spam filter, threading, not folder based. And when two-way authentication becomes available in my part of the world, security won't be an issue either.
What's not to like! :D
I'm a PC. I like the unpredictability.

Let me give you another reason to use GMail. They have recently introduced a two factor authentication scheme you can opt in. They provide:

- authentication apps for android and iOS devices
- codes sent via sms and voice call for the other phones (you can configure two phones)
- emergency codes that you can print and keep safe in case you lose your phone

I voted, neither.

I know people that have businesses that are tied down to Outlook, which imho, is a nightmare. Gmail lets them keep their business addresses and escape the tediousness of Outlook. They love Gmail.

I have never used Hotmail, nor do I have the desire to do so.

I have been using Yahoo! Mail for the last couple of years. It does everything I need it to do and it is rarely sluggish. I prefer Yahoo!.

Just one persons humble opinion. ;)
