Postby KodyRichardson » Sat Jul 25, 2009 4:08 pm

Hey guys I had AVG for about 3 years but recently switched to another anti-virus but anyways:

Things I like about AVG:
Sleek look
finds *mostly* everything
daily updates
alerts

Things I dislike:
Doesnt always find everythign
doesnt protect against rootkits
link scanner doesnt always work

what do you guys think?

I used to like AVG but then it became such a resource hog, I left it behind.

For what I didn't mind about it, see the AVG low quality thread.

No AV catches all malware.

AVG is no longer a great product! Hope they will change tactics and provide better protection to free users. Everybody is talking about AVG and rootkits protection, the problem is that they stopped having a good detection rate..
A fool with an antivirus tool is still a fool.
If you can't convince them, confuse them.
The last thing I want to do is insult you. But it IS on the list.

I could say the same thing about all the free AVs that i've used.

AVG Free: nice interface but detection rates are a bit low. Also the Heal button is supposed to delete files the AV can't heal. It does that but it displays a warning: "file not found". Also poor self-protection (can be shut down for a second using the Task Manager).
Avast Home: I like the fact that it detects malicious links and has good detection rates, but I don't like the interface at all.
Avira Personal: Good detection rates, the interface is OK but it sometimes displays the same warning more than once...for no reason.
Comodo Internet Security: Great HIPS module (defense+) but not a great AV (they are working on it...). I would also like fewer pop-ups.
Microsoft security essentials: Great detection rate (so far...). Poor self protection, still in beta stage.

Even if I don't like everything about the free AV products I will never call them "low-quality". A great amount of work is involved in making this products and they are much better than many payed AVs. I appreciate the fact that I can have good protection at no cost.

When you say a great amount of work i know you mean in a good way, in AVG case they are going downhill. So you are right, all free av's have good parts and bad parts but i really don't see a good part in AVG except the fact that it's free but limited.

Oh, well... i guess you are right. What matters the most is detection rate (signatures+heuristics) and few false-positives. AVG needs to work on that :P.
