User is asked to choose between the basic installation (Firewall Only), the advanced version (Firewall with Optimum Proactive Defense) or the option with maximum use of the options Defence+ has got to offer (Firewall with Maximum Proactive Defence+). The basic Firewall notably limits the number of pop-ups because Comodo will only check the internet activities, which is safe enough for most users. For monitoring the activities of the installed application, it is necessary to select the option Firewall with Optimum Proactive Defense or Firewall with Maximum Proactive Defence+. Be aware that choosing for these options will result in notable more pop-ups to be answered! In the next steps of this manual describes the settings for the Firewall with Optimum Proactive Defense.

If you don't want a HIPS (Defense +) then go with the Firewall Only

Other Question you asked, here is a comparison of what the different versions of avira offers

I'm using Avira Free with Comodo Firewall and Defense + and it works well for me along with SuperAntiSpyware Free and MalwareBytes AntiMalware Free for on demand scanning.

Any option will work fine, the defense + is something extra here's the description of what it does from the Comodo Help File.
The Defense+ component of Comodo Internet Security is a host intrusion prevention system that constantly monitors the activities of all executable files on your PC. With Defense+ activated, the user is warned EVERY time an unknown application executable (.exe, .dll, .sys, .bat etc) attempts to run. The only executables that are allowed to run are the ones you give permission to. An application can be given such permission to run in a variety of ways including; manually granting them execution rights in Computer Security Policy; by deciding to treat the executable as trusted at a Defense+ alert or simply because the application is on the Comodo safe list. Defense+ also automatically protects system-critical files and folders such as registry entries to prevent unauthorized modification. Such protection adds another layer of defense to Comodo Internet Security by preventing malware from ever running and by preventing any processes from making changes to vital system files.

Having D+ off is unless. Comodo firewall needs D+ to be leak proof just like OA needs its HIPS on.

Expect tons of pop ups from D+. I mean tons. Do you have D+ in Safe Mode or Clean PC Mode? Wait till you try installing something new. You will be inundated with D+ alerts.

Safe Mode is better then Clean PC Mode. In Clean PC Mode you will have to deal with thousands pf pending files every week or hundreds everyday. Safe Mode for the D+ and the Firewall are the best settings and most secure.
