That's good advice about trying Microsoft's cleanup tool.
After you install it you should have a Windows Installer Cleanup Utility entry in your Start Menu, if I recall correctly.
If not, it's just a matter of navigating to your Program Files folder, finding the right folder, and running one of the two executables contained within.
I don't recall the filename so I can't say which of the two it is though.
Once run I know that MSE used to be listed as Microsoft Antimalware, but it may have been changed since then so look for Microsoft Security Essentials first.
