Specs have nothing to do with whats going on. If the laptop is running Windows 7 then the specs but be pretty good.

I went ahead with the dban with autonuke. It was a success. I installed windows and noticed that my 2 hard drives is now just 1 with all storage. The installation went grand. still need to install drivers and updates, but is the 2nd hard drive necessary. Will I have to create that?

I have a dell inspiron 1520 btw.

2 hard internal hard drives on a laptop? Or do you mean 2 partitions? Or do you mean your external hard drive? I sure hope you did not leave that plugged in while doing this?

Well I had a c: drive and a d: drive. Previously when reinstalling windows it showed 2 partitions. Now it shows 1 labelled unallocated storage or something like that, after using dban. And have 1 hard drive when logged in. But this now has the storage space of my previous d: drive.

And no, my portable hard drive was not plugged in during dban.

You most likely had a hidden partition you could have booted into. Hence then reason for 2 drives. You actually had one internal hard drive with 2 partitions. Did this pc come with Windows 7? So you took all the steps I said correct? You used Dban then installed Windows. Right? Now what are you doing? You are also going to need to use Dban to wipe your external drive. So you need to reboot using Dban and wipe your external drive clean. BE SURE TO WIPE YOUR EXTERNAL DRIVE AND NOT YOUR INTERNAL DRIVE WHEN YOU DO THIS. Reboot using Dban then plug your external drive in. Most likely it will not be there when you first boot so then reboot again. You DO NOT want to plug your external drive in when your in Windows cause it most likely is infected also.

It was a windows vista. Not all steps are finished as i just installed windows so far. Installing drivers and updates are still to be done. The d: drive was basically a backup drive but i never really used this as my backups and images are put in the portable hard drive. Now its the partitions i need to be certain with. Do I need to recreate another partition to create a d drive? Do I need to rename these partitions? The one is now labelled unallocated. Logged in its a c drive while the d drive is my cd/dvd drive.

And what is the best option in dban to use on my external hard drive. I used autonuke for my internal hard drive.

P.S. I thought i should also mention that in the steps you gave me, i couldnt pull off step 4: Format the drive using a low level format. The option was there but greyed out and couldnt click. Presumably because there was no file on it?

You can just delete the "D" drive. Your OS is on the 'C" drive correct? Yes use the same steps for your external drive as you did your internal drive. Your OS is usually your "C" drive and your cd/dvd drive is your "E" drive. Your external drive will now be your "D" drive once its ready. You will need to go into Admin tools/Computer management to do this.
