well i thought that avg had a better user interface and have finaly included antirootkit
but mse is quite heavy on resources
they are both heavily targeted by malware

Re: AVG 10 Free vs MSE 1.0/2.0

Postby pranaygtr » Tue Oct 19, 2010 4:30 pm

Antivirus
- Decent detection rates on both products.

Extra-Features (HIPS,Firewall,Sandbox)
AVG 10 Free:
- Better integrated versions of LinkScanner (to prevent exploits) and ID Protection (behavioral analysis)

Microsoft Security Essentials:
- None, although MSE2.0 BETA will have some extras, but limited to the IE web browser.

Overall prevention capabilites.
AVG 10 Free:
- More chance of preventing infections with LinkScanner and IDP. On top of the standard Realtime scanner.

Microsoft Security Essentials:
- Better chance when combined with IE's SmartScreen technology to stop malicious downloads.

Removal capabilites
AVG 10 Free:
- The on-access scanner and IDP may clash, when both detect the malware. (Remember with Avast 4.8).

Microsoft Security Essentials:
- ~

System Impact
AVG 10 Free:
- Runs with 9 processes, but is light on the system. Only effects were seen when system booted up and shutdown.

Microsoft Security Essentials:
- Uses a fair amount of RAM, but overall light on the system. CPU usage spiked when removing malware or during scheduled scans.

GUI
AVG 10 Free:
- Relatively easily to navigate through. Only annoyance is Ad at bottom of AVG GUI.

Microsoft Security Essentials:
- Simple. Easy to use.

Usability (User friendliness)
AVG 10 Free:
- Advanced settings are can be found in the Menu bar. Malware detection pop-ups can too much (imo), better if it was simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials:
- ~

Cons
AVG 10 Free:
- Large installer, unnecessary 3rd party AVG Security Toolbar with LinkScanner.

Microsoft Security Essentials:
- Lacks solid self-protection.

It would help if the O poster elaborated on which AVG version and which MSE version.
