Where's all the Avira love gone?

Postby Senexx » Wed Jan 12, 2011 6:51 pm

Where's all the Avira love?

It used to be raved about in here. In my opinion, the free Avira personal is still the best AV around.
That is only because I haven't tried Microsoft Security Essentials and beyond Windows have a bit of bias against MS.

Even the Antivirus competition and security suite competition suite here on rM it seems to lose out still. And that'd be the paid versions I presume.

So Where's all the Avira love gone?

There is plenty of love for Avira in my camp. It has given me excellent protection. I have tried MSE, AVG, Viper, and Avast. All of those cause my computer to to hang slightly at times and start up significantly slower. I cannot stand that. The only way that I know Avira is running, is I never have viruses or other malware and I see it's icon on the toolbar. I do admit that I have had a few false positives, but I have experienced no catastrophic system failures or malfunctions even after I quarantined some things that I should not have. The updater is much smoother these days and I killed the splash screen. I still get the nag screen once in a while, but it does not bother me. I am used to it.

IMHO, Avira 10 free edition is solid protection that does not cost me a dime.

If Avira ever stops offering the free version, I will buy it. I have no desire to have a suite like NIS or KIS. I have a quasi suite. ;)

By the way Senexx......great question.

I still like Avira. It's detection has always been tops in my tests and other tests (such as Av-Comparatives). Although other free AV's may have lower detection, they are a bit lighter than Avira, just from what I've seen. If you can deal with a little bit of PC slowdown, Avira's the best for you.

False positives are its own poison. I dumped Avira many years ago when the umbrella refused to open up start up. Many cases about and no fix was being sought. After a few months I axed it along with the nag screen.

Avira still does well in tests but in real-world testing I have not been as happy with the results so for me I moved to an alternative because of how much was being missed by real-world users.

Still like it and still not receiving those legendary FP's using and testing it on High heuristic settings.
A fool with an antivirus tool is still a fool.
If you can't convince them, confuse them.
The last thing I want to do is insult you. But it IS on the list.

I may go back to Avira. I'm going to do a complete change of my security setup soon. I loved Avira when i first used it. Just the UI that annoyed me.
I actually joined on: Dec 14th 2009. I got banned and my account deleted.

I haven't had a FP on Avira in years.
In the meantime I'll take detection rate over resource usage
As long of use of resources doesn't slow the PC to a crawl

In fact I don't even remember getting a FP on Avira but there may have been some in the early days when I adopted it.

RossN, the UI annoyed me too but I got past it.

I would not think it would be too much longer, but I do not know.
