Speed up the PC

Postby Esetisthebest » Wed Mar 23, 2011 2:38 pm

Hello!

I don't know whether or not this is the right place to ask this question, but what the heck..

I'm having a trouble with my PC being "slow". It's not a major issue, but it's quite disturbing. It is taking about 1 minute when I try to open "Computer" from the desktop, and it's taking about 2 or 3 minutes when I try to load the PC(turn it on). This is extremely odd, because I have a laptop, which isn't as good as this computer I'm using now, and it is loading faster than this computer, and it's loading the "Computer" instantly.

I guess I have tried almost everything to fix this problem. I did a scan with Eset Nod32 4.2 and a scan with Malwarebytes, but nothing malicious found. I have used CCleaner, but nothing changed. I have deleted all unnecessary programs on my computer, but still nothing have changed. I have to admit my hard drive ain't the newest one(maybe 2 or 3 years old), and it has 77.4gb free storage space of 232gb(it's a 250gb hard drive).

Additionally, my computer is slow at opening any kind of files/programs/games.

Anyway, my specs on the current computer is(not the laptop):
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
4GB RAM
Intel Core 2duo CPU E8400 @ 3GHz
250GB Hard Drive

My specs on the laptop is
Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1
4GB RAM
250 GB Hard Drive
2,80 GHz

Uninstall Comodo and see if its better. If not uninstall Eset and see if its better. You should also before doing any of this download Process Explorer and see which program is eating up your cpu. How many running processes do you have?

then, check your services and disable or put to manual some of them (http://www.blackviper.com/2010/12/17/bl ... gurations/)

reduce the number of programs that start with windows.

defragment your disk

defragment and compact your registry (with Windows 7 manager for example)

I'm not using any other anti-virus program than Eset. I feel very happy with Eset, since it's light and its engine is good - catching everything. I haven't had a virus infection before, so I'm happy with it. I think I've used it since the 2.0 version. I really don't know when it happened, to be honest. Maybe 6 months ago. And no, I don't get any kind of error message during or on start-up.

I have Process Explorer, but it will not do any difference, since my problem is happening when I open the file. I don't really have a generally slow PC. Plus, it's not a program that's eating up my PC.. When I open the Task Manager, svchost.exe is using most memory with its 109 628kb. But it's a windows process, and I can't do anything about it. Running processes? You mean the ones that appears in Task Manager? 70("Show processes from all users" is on).

I'm not really interested in defragment my disk. I have installed CCleaner, and I've disabled all unnecessary programs that start with windows.

But again, the problem is not that my PC is slow, it's when I shall open any kind of files or exe's.

If you want help then take it. If not then dont bother asking. Defragging your hard drive is a first step. Eliminating unnessary start up items is another. Follow the steps we provided and go from there.

If you Google "How to speed up my pc?". You will get.

1. Disk cleanup
2. Uninstall unused programs
3. Defrag

Then after that you start disabling start up items. CCleaner is good for this.

if u right click on the concerned svchost.exe, and click on "go to services" u will see which of them are used by your system, some are launched uselessly so using the link i gave u you can prevent their starting by disabling or set them to manual. you will gain useful amount of ram.

Sounds to me as if you have way too many running processes. BTW..................Threatfire will slow you down big time. Monitor both Threatfire exe's with Process Explorer.

Ohhh! Sorry, I think I misunderstood you a bit. I have 16 running processes during startup. I had to check CCleaner. :P

I'll fix the Threatfire thing. Thanks again. :)
