Unhide.exe

Postby Dieselman » Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:41 am

There is a new problem arising after a malware attack. After you kill and remove a rogue you now have to clean up the mess it left behind. Many of times its re-directs but now I am seeing other problems. I cleaned up Smart Defragger rogue and after Start/All Programs was empty. When I went into the "C" drive that was also empty. Where did the files go? If I went in Add/Remove Programs they were all there. I could go online and the netbook performed flawlessly. So I Googled the problem for awhile and came up with nothing. So I searched BleepingComputers and found my answer. This is where it pays to use your head rather then simply asking a question. I found a program called Unhide.exe and downloaded. I ran it and presto...................All files are now shown again. So just cause you test the latest malware in a VM does not mean you know the proper steps in removing it. So even though I removed the rogue the damage it left behind was still present. Here is the download link for Unhide.exe. Its a must program to keep in your toolkit.

You probably could have checked the box by show hidden files.

Nope...................................That does not work. Show hidden files could be unchecked or checked. It did not matter. If I made it so Windows showed the hidden files ONLY the customer's files would show. The "C" drive was still blank and there were no programs listed in the Start menu. What happened was the direct result of malware aftermath.

Ah ha. I knew that my suggestion seemed too simple, somehow.

Thanks. This will come in useful. It's a pain trying to clean the mess up after some of the new rogues.

Funny thing is just a few days ago I knew of and used this program to finish the laptop I had here, worked very well. Guess I should have mentioned it huh...lol, only knew of it because of some research I was doing after a phone call from a friend with some issues.

Dieselman I think I ran into this problem a few weeks ago. My uncles netbook had the same problems, the "C" drive was not showing any files, etc. I actually should of Google searched the problem, but I like challenges. What happened was the malware actually disabled things in registry, I enabled them and it was back to normal. Thanks for posting this.
