I had so many people asking me to re-review Avast with thorough scanning turned on.  So, my friends, here ya go.  Happy Halloween!

    Yess, a new video :D ,

Will you upload more videos today?

hmm interesting, xpantivirus2008 kicked his butt^^

What I can say, Avast has improved a lot lately. In av-comparatives and av-test it scored higher than other good avs like Kaspersky. However I think that the through scanner is a joke. It just scans all the parts of a file, instead of infectable ones only. That's practically useless. For instance, if we have an infected avi movie, the thorough scan doesn't scan only the executable part(which is the infected one), but the entire file. That's just a waste of time. Anyway, it seemed to fail with Rogues. But I think that if it is used with SAS+MBAM it will be almost perfect.

  • AV-Guy

WOW! Thanks Matt! Avast really sucked with the rogue apps. I honestly thought it would have performed better, but I do use it in conjunction with MBAM and SAS. You are right they definitely need to work on their spyware detection especially as one as common as XP Antivirus. Thank you again for the review.

As another potential review, I suggest Spyware Doctor w/Antivirus Starter Edition. It has a reduced database versus the paid version, and I am curious as to how this would perform on a heavily infected machine versus the paid version.

    Cheers.

Hi this is my first comment here :o ).

However, My ESS "Eset smart security" license runs out in 12 days,

and i have been thinking about if i should change to PCtools internet security suite.

But i'm not sure, then i saw that you are going to review PCtool's

"internet security suite" so i hope you can make that review before my license

    runs out :o )

Please can you also test and see how good the in-build firewall is? that would be great to know as well as the rest of the features.

    Cheers, Johan

Pctools firewall is the weakest part of there security. Why not take spyware docktor with antitvirus + comodo firewall.

I think Matt loves Spyware Doc for its cleaning/detecting abilities…

But overall.. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is a better choice… version 2009 has one of the best firewalls (with HIPS) and its detection/removal capabilities are among the very best.

Like Matt mentioned in one of the reviews, unlike other AV softwares, Kaspersky doesnt ignore adware.. especially the rogue applications that are so common these days. Btw, kaspersky's malware signature count is touching the 1.4 million mark :)

The review is not correct. The Virus Database is out of date!…in your video it says the VPS file is 080723-1 which means virus database is from July,23 2008 so that makes it 3 months old….

I hope this was a mistake…and you will test avast again with an up to date virus database file. thx;)

  • malwarekilla

@bob – the vpsupd.exe was downloaded on the day of the review.

  • Bob

Yeah but something was wrong because if you look at the part 2 video at 8min 47sec you see that it says virus database is 080723-1…and that's a 3 months old virus databese file. Maybe the vpsupd.exe failed to update because that pc was so full of malware?!

  • malwarekilla

@Bob – Avast performed an update on it's own and I loaded the latest database last night (again). There is no change. I took a look on the Avast website and they barely mention anti-adware, so I suppose Avast is fine for AV but needs anti-adware help from another app.

  • Bob

yeah thanks for doing that again, and sorry for your time i thought it would perform better with the latest updates but…:|. Thanks again.
