A new config from Matthew

Ok guy’s Matthew submitted a config….wadda’ think:

Normally I have Nod32 v4 installed alongside prevx and comodo firewall but today I’m trying out PC Tools Internet Security 2009 alongside Prevx. Brilliant as it is, PC Tools is still quite a hog so I’ll probably go back to Nod and comodo soon.

Mac Malware Bundled with Pirated iWork 09 and Photoshop CS4

LOL! …OK, I’m sorry…but I hope I stop hearing “the best antivirus is a Mac” talk. OSX is getting pretty popular these days and malware distributors are finally taking notice.

Pirated copies iWork 09 and Photoshop CS4 are being bundled all sorts of malware…from unix rootkits (have fun removing one of those) to rogue mac antivirus (imunizator). iWork 09 and Photoshop CS4 are being distributed via P2P mac networks as well as bit torrent hubs.

EDIT – 6:24 PM – A Rep from PC Tools just informed me that they have an antivirus (anti-malware) solution for Mac called iAntiVirus.

The iAntiVirus™ database has been designed from the ground up to detect and remove Mac specific threats. This enables a high level of protection whilst keeping memory footprint and resource usage at a minimum. The iAntiVirus™ database is not cluttered with signatures for Windows specific threats which your Mac is immune against.

PC Tools Free Antivirus Review Results – Don’t bother…

While PC Tools Internet Security and Spyware Doctor with Antivirus are truly 2 awesome anti-malware applications their free antivirus is not.

It’s now clear to me that the power of PC Tools comes from the fantastic detection and removal technology of Spyware Doctor. I downloaded the latest version of the Free antivirus from pctools.com and put it to task on my latest infected pc.

PC Tools Free Antivirus detected and removed over 40 viruses, but left everything else behind and was continuously corrupted (see screen shot below). In my test I had to re-install PC Tools Free Antivirus 2 times…on the 3rd time I halted the review.

(the image below was taken after a full scan, removal and reboot.)

If you’re looking for some good free antivirus then choose Avira AntiVir.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus Rules!!!

I just started working on my next anti-malware review and I’m completely blown away on how well PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus scored! It was absolutely perfect!! The only downer is that it’s not free, but hey…who cares…looks like malware has met it’s match (so far :) ).

I’m working on the video review right now.

What ThreatFire Basic is and is not.

ThreatFire basic can identify and halt malware processes and activities, it does NOT remove them. For malware removal indentified by Threatfire you need to buy the pro version which costs $29.95. I personally tested ThreatFire on my infected virtual machine and was pretty satisfied with how it prevented the malware from doing anything. The malware on the VM was still there, but was effectively allowed to do nothing.

PC Tools ThreatFire Basic is an excellent add-on to your current anti-virus. Here are some reasons why.

  • It’s Free.
  • Does not require updates (they are available though).
  • Provides a second opinion.
  • Prevents malware from doing anything. Once a malicious process is identified it’s in the ThreatFire prison.
  • The full version is cheap! $29.95 for some really nice extra functionality.
