Can’t Access The Internet After Removing A Rogue?

The latest generation of Rogue Anti-Virus changes your internet connection settings, specifically the proxy settings.  On an infected PC all traffic is routed through a local proxy on your pc (which is malware based).  Currently these settings are usually:

127.0.0.1:5555

The 127.0.0.1 is your PC and the 5555 is an open port on your pc listening for instructions (and possibly capturing traffic).  Why do the rogues do this?  To intercept ALL internet activity initiated by you (no matter if you’re using IE, FireFox or Chrome).

Once you remove the rogue the proxy settings stay in place and that means you can’t get to the internet.  Fixing this is really easy.

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click Tools
  3. Internet Options
  4. Connections
  5. Click Lan Settings
  6. Uncheck the first proxy server setting
  7. Click OK twice.

You should be able to get on the internet with any browser now.

Ok guy’s Matthew submitted a config….wadda’ think:

Normally I have Nod32 v4 installed alongside prevx and comodo firewall but today I’m trying out PC Tools Internet Security 2009 alongside Prevx. Brilliant as it is, PC Tools is still quite a hog so I’ll probably go back to Nod and comodo soon.

PC Tools Free Antivirus Review Results – Don’t bother…

While PC Tools Internet Security and Spyware Doctor with Antivirus are truly 2 awesome anti-malware applications their free antivirus is not.

It’s now clear to me that the power of PC Tools comes from the fantastic detection and removal technology of Spyware Doctor. I downloaded the latest version of the Free antivirus from pctools.com and put it to task on my latest infected pc.

PC Tools Free Antivirus detected and removed over 40 viruses, but left everything else behind and was continuously corrupted (see screen shot below). In my test I had to re-install PC Tools Free Antivirus 2 times…on the 3rd time I halted the review.

(the image below was taken after a full scan, removal and reboot.)

If you’re looking for some good free antivirus then choose Avira AntiVir.
