Please continue and show us how you would remove the malware. Also please state if you thing ANY product could survive an install on an infected machine!

    What review is next?

I’m more than curious how you clean out this machine. Though I’m disappointed to learn that Avast has such a low removal capability, ones a machine is infected. I run Avast free on all my machines and it works great in pro-active state. It blocks the vast majority of nasty stuff that try s to enter my machine. Also the sandbox is highly appreciated.

I agree with you Henk; Also Avast used to be a pretty good way to get rid of infestations even when first installed. I don’t know what has happened since then, but when it would install it would suddenly reboot and kick butt in the Post Environment to absolutely destroy anything that moved! After scanning and coming back to the desktop it would finish updating and I’d scan again , just for good measure. I’m really surprised it didn’t perform better. Maybe it has something to do with being in a virtual machine with no actual hard drive, that makes a difference?

    @ jcitizen
I run Avast on the Win7 host machine, as well on three VM machines (2 Win7 and 1 XP) All with the same results.

A recent update to the 7 version (host machine) resulted in a mess. I had to de-install the 7 and re-install the 6 version. All with a lot of problems and using special removal tools. Though, I installed Avast again despite of this small hiccup.

Additionally; I use sandboxie in all browsing and have Threatfire installed for the zero day threats. Also the Hosts file is adjusted to keep compromised web addresses away from my system.

Avast and Threatfire AV work well together, but I have opted out of Avast altogether. I am sticking with Sandboxie and Threatfire AV. I don’t deal with a software firewall either.

I use software firewalls, because they saved my bacon more that once, from worms spreading inside my LAN. Even if I had only one computer behind my hardware UTM appliance, I would still use Comodo or Online Armor. Both available free of charge.

        • ZOU

Worms in the LAN are second worst only to rootkits, imho; what a mess.

I had the same problem when I updated to the 7 version. I ended up using Revo Uninstaller and got rid of it all and went with AVG free.

It could be that Avast is running into teething problems as it improves over time. I don’t know, but I’m not willing to give up on it yet – for sure! I have too many security features on my machine to list here, but I was thinking of Threatfire, until CNET gave me a free trial of Mamutu. I was so impressed I’m am going to buy the Suite version with Online Armor firewall and anti-malware when it comes due.

This Emisoft utility found all the DRM spys on my PC within seconds, and shut them down!! I had to check them as unmonitored in the console to get my media content working again. My PC is working better than I remember in a long time! I just let Avast Pro lapse into a free license. The firewall doesn’t get along with the DRM either. Emisoft will even catch government sponsored spies, much to the embarrassment of the German government! ]:) Remove Malware has tested this product, if I remember correctly, and it didn’t do badly at all.

I still recommend Threatfire to my clients.

Thanks estechguy! That has been more like my experiences on non-VMs.

I had to talk really softly in this because people were in the room next to me. I did not feel like having them coming in and asking what the heck i was doing. lol
