F-Secure ISTP 2010 Review

Last night I took a look at F-Secure's ISTP 2010 and the results were really impressive. F-Secure managed to block all 10 malicious URL's but only when DeepGuard (their behavioral anti-malware engine) was set to "always ask".

GOOD:

  • Free to test.
  • Blocks and removes malware with very little fuss.
  • Easily configurable.
  • Easy install process.
  • Scans web sites and links for malware.
  • Scans web traffic for malware.
  • Has a strong Behavior Blocker called DeepGuard.
  • Absolutely elegant interface.

BAD:

  • The initial updates take nearly 25 minutes (I just found out that updates are coming from Europe.  I was told when the product goes live they will have update servers in the US).
  • The initial configuration is NOT good.  F-Secure needs to automatically check web traffic for malware (just a little check box) and DeepGuard needs to ask everytime, otherwise it's pretty useless.  I realize they are trying to minimize popups, but DeepGuard is just NOT smart enough to know what's good an bad (which results in 90% of everything malicious being set to allowed).
