AVG 8.0 Security Toolbar Includes Yahoo Search

by malwarekilla on April 25, 2008

Get the best antivirus available today. Free Scan

AVG has released another version of their free anti-virus product (version 8.0), only this time they have included AVG Anti-Spyware and something called the AVG Security Toolbar (which scans for hijacked websites and drive by downloads).

While I applaud AVG giving us AVG Anti-Spyware it’s too bad that their security toolbar has to include yahoo search. The toolbar is optional, so I suppose I can’t complain too much.

If you don’t want to install the AVG Security toolbar but you still want to make sure websites you are visiting are somewhat safe I would recommend installing AVG without the Security Toolbar and adding Mcafee Site Advisor (which checks to see if a website is safe and does not add any toolbars in your browser).

If you accidently installed the avg security toolbar and you want to remove / uninstall the security toolbar there are 2 options:

1. Uninstall AVG and Re-Install it, however this time select a custom install and uncheck the AVG Security Toolbar.

2. Use ToolBar Cop 3.4 and just disable or delete the Security Toolbar.

You don’t have to uninstall AVG 8 and reinstall it in order to get rid of the Toolbar. Instead, run the installation file again, choose “Add/Remove Components,” and then un-check the Toolbar option when it’s presented.

I’ll note that this worked with the commercial (paid) version of AVG Anti-Virus with Firewall. I can’t speak for whether it works with AVG Free.

Also, keep in mind that moving the AVG installation file (50+ MB) from one location to another may result in a report of “corrupt file” when you try to run it again. Even one bit not copying perfectly will make AVG fail its internal hash-check when the install file is run again.

And on an unrelated feature: AVG 8 doesn’t allow you to do manual updates, not without its reporting an “error” condition on the system tray and main interface screen. You have to set up at least one daily automatic update for the “error” indicators to disappear. This bothers me – I don’t even let Microsoft do automatic updates to XP.

You don’t have to do either.
You can disable it in both firefox and IE using the Tools menu.
If you google “disable AVG site check” you will find numerous detailed instructions.
Then just don’t bother to display the toolbar.

Then, sometime when you have time or are updating AVG you can reinstall without this feature.

The site checking was very s l o-o-o-w so I am just sticking with SiteAdvisor. I suspect that the AVG checker does more and when it is refined (and/or when I get a faster machine) I will give it another try.

I’m with ya on that one, Avg’s linkscanner is just slow at this point. I’m just using SiteAdvisor, which has always worked perfectly for me.

Thanks Graybird. I can confirm that your solution works on the AVG 8.0 Free version too.

Site advisor is also mailware because its a bot that visits every site you see on a google search page. Including all the adverts. It clicks on the adverts costing advertisors money. And its overloading webservers everywhere. It visits sites even if the user doesnt. Its an abusive bot that needs to be investigated.

Hmm, that’s wild. As a PPC advertiser that would indeed PO me.

WOT (Web Of Trust)is better than SiteAdvisor, which doesn’t block dangerous sites at all.

Hello dear webmaster,
One day in March 2009 I downloaded the AVG Antivirus version. As I assume it was version 8.0. Sometimes when I search for thing on yahoo.ca there pops up a big windows which tells me no results found. I shall enter a query string. Had someone the same problem. AVG is removed from my computer from an customer service person, but not From my yahoo Toolbar. How can I enter on my yahoo Toolbar. I try to do it online on yahoo toolbar, but I cannot find the item which changes the setting.

I appreciate your help, hopefully the right person…

Sebastian
