Microsoft din a good job, but I think this application will get targeted a lot by malware trying to disable it. I hope it has good self-protection. It is great that Microsoft got more security conscious.

TheHumanAntivirus June 24, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Wow, I’m stunned. I was expecting it to be rubbish.

Dario June 24, 2009 at 1:30 pm

I agree with Bogdan, it better have some good self defences. Like ZoneAlarm is also the most targeted firewall. MS did a really good job on this. Clean, simple, lightweight and to-the-point. Windows Defender was more like a weak anti-malware protection mixed with existing Windows tools such as defrag and backups. This feels more like a real anti-malware tool.

Dario June 24, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I suppose the market for Sandboxing and HIPS programs is something Microsoft has not covered (yet?). SO programs like GesWall, AppGuard, Sandboxie etc…will be more popular.

Nashua June 24, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Wow, good detection rate! Nice review Matt.

I uninstalled Avira free and went for a MSE installation.
MSE had a strange behavior on my PC – made my computer work too slow in a way impossible to work.
Then I had to uninstall MSE and go back to Avira Free.
Does anyone have the same problem?

Wav3_Cracker June 24, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Victor, I did also go from Avira free to Mse and i can`t say I have had any problems with errors or slow-downs maybe you have another on-acess scanner active? It can depend on alot of things … :( you should maybe consider waiting for the final release or check on different forums what the problem could possible be. It`s kinda annoying when somethings like that happends when you have been waiting for it in such a long time I feel with you man, good luck.

croatian sensation June 24, 2009 at 5:27 pm

@victor I have both avira free and mse running at the same time and my computer is doing just fine, pretty much no difference.

TrojanHunter June 24, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Great for people who want free Anti-virus, but bad for other security companies. Microsoft is basically offering payware standards for free, with No Ads or restrictions.

BTW, Very good review Matt and I always think your Videos are awesome!! :)

malwarekilla June 24, 2009 at 7:55 pm

@TrojanHunter – I agree. I think this is going to put some major stress on consumer AV sales.

malwarekilla June 24, 2009 at 7:57 pm

@Dario – I agree. Programs like Sandboxie or Threatfire have a larger niche now.

languy99 June 24, 2009 at 8:10 pm

As good as MSE is, I think the future will be security suites that have multiple layers. Such as G-DATA that has two AV engines, firewall, heuristics and behavior analysis. I personally would like them to add a sandbox and with that they could call it a perfect suite. Doing that while keeping resource usage low (20-30MB ram max will will help sales.

Jack June 24, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I have it downloaded. Seems pretty good, but can I use it with Avira and Threatfire already running realtime? I don’t think it will conflict with MBAM or SAS running on-demand.

malwarekilla June 24, 2009 at 9:19 pm

@languy99 – that’s true, but MSE is FREE and GOOD. Those are 2 things that people find hard to pass up.

JJ June 24, 2009 at 10:36 pm

What will work with MSE?

Threatfire? PrevX? Geswall? Defensewall? Sandboxie?

ryan June 24, 2009 at 11:44 pm

@ every one i keep getting an error trying to update security essentails is any one getting it? @jj i think geswall will work with it but im not sure sence it is a beta but im sure it wont be nessiserry to run a hips becouse it has a nice detection rate

Victor June 24, 2009 at 11:50 pm

Matt,

As you sad softwares like Sandboxie or Threatfire have a larger niche now and I agree with you.
But there is also Prevx.
When are you going to test Prevx 3?
It would be great to know more about this software!
Thanks!

I have been using MSE, with Comodo firewall & D+, and IObit 360. They all run together well so far.

ryan June 25, 2009 at 2:27 am

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can no longer down load security essentials they where limited to a sertin amount of downloads so they people that have it are very luck i had to get rid of mine becouse it has many error problems on my pc it really sucked updateing it morro was makeing me mad will all the error messages but they need to fix something

Matthew June 25, 2009 at 5:21 am

Essentials was also a CPU hog for me. Its probably because my desktop still has the antiquated 2.8Ghz single core Intel CPU though. :P

I’m going back to the ever reliable Nod32.

malwaredestroyer June 25, 2009 at 7:17 am

matt it would be great if this product add more protection (for example firewall)

Jonas June 25, 2009 at 9:46 am
Bo June 25, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Security Essentials works flawlessly for me. It updates easily and every time. Install was simple, the interface is simple and clean. Detection rate is amazing. Finally some competition in the free AV world.

Good review !

This software works better than expected.
It´s a good security tool and if you have Vista or Windows 7 with “UAC” and default firewall ON you should have a decent configuration with Microsoft tools only.
So think about this –>

Vista/Seven x64 with UAC ON; Windows Firewall; MSE and IE8 with “Smart Screen”.

You have a solid configuration.

Altough I think that we may see malware/rootkits in a very near future that will target all that (as many are doing right now). Exploits, etc…
Not to mention that other third parties software may have better “security” with the bonuses from being “faster”.

But it´s very good to see Microsoft DOING stuff to protected the users.

malwaredestroyer June 26, 2009 at 10:02 am

and u need a genuine windows :D

grant June 27, 2009 at 3:14 am

So far this MSE is working great. Tested with a bunch of files that I use and MSE stopped them all. I was using Avira Antivir Free and it was good as well. Currently I am using MSE, Threatfire and Outpost Firewall 2009(free) and these seem to be working well together so far. One thing that I did in the MSE settings is to list some process exclusions namely; the firewall, Threatfire, my video card driver and a couple of other ‘trusted’ processes. Thanks for the great video!

can you please check out morro when the pc is already infected??

Phil August 20, 2009 at 9:03 am

Like most avid computer users I have sought the holy grail of security – what feels right, and is cheap or free. After years of trying all them, I have finally settled on what I consider my optimum arrangement: Windows firewall, and Bufferzone and now MSE. My gang of three.
I use windows firewall because I am sick of cryptic alerts. I appreciate it is a one way only firewall but my view is that your other security should take care of any bad stuff on the pc. I like Bufferzone a lot as it gives extra confidence when surfing – it has helped a lot when a bad website is encountered. And finally MSE – the missing piece of the jigsaw. Prior to this I used Avast, but MSE is a really sweet piece of software, which MS should be proud of. It is simple and adds no drag to the PC, and sits there and takes care of business with no nags – how good is that. I finally have a secure system with no chatty software bugging me. Incidentally I run XP and have never been infected. Enjoy!

Well I run Mbam And Msse So far Conflicts

I do Check my prosess to see if any traces of the Old Anit Virus remain And remove Via Tool remover Or Use a tool called “Appremover” To avoid System problems Slowdowns.
