AVG 8.0 to Bundle the Yahoo Toolbar

FYI – AVG 8 is just OK. If you want real protection and removal abilities get Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus

Grisoft ( makers of AVG Antivirus and Antispyware ) have announced that they will be bundling the yahoo search toolbar with the new AVG Free version 8.0. This seems to be pretty common these days. Anyway to make a buck I suppose.

What the problem with this practice?

  1. Toolbars in IE or Firefox will make the browser run slower, it’s just another item that parses and processes every page load.
  2. The checkbox to install the toolbar is automatically checked. Less savvy users will think this yahoo toolbar is necessary when it is actually not.

Our advice is to never load any toolbars in IE or Firefox unless you absolutely must. Remember, toolbars will slow your browsing down, and 60% of them are malicious in nature.

okay, so how do I remove the avg security-yahoo search engine toolbar?

  • malwarekilla

You can re-run the setup and choose to not install the avg toolbar or uninstall and reinstall, only this time do not choose the avg toolbar.

I’ve downloaded the latest AVG Free installer (avg_free_stf_all_8_100a1295.exe), installed it, and had to spend 15 minutes researching how to remove the toolbar when it slowed down my browsing speed. I would not agree if someone call me not computer savvy, but I missed the significance of that check mark during the installation. :(

I did not tick the yahoo toolbar add option but I have a whole lot of AVG protection on my toolbar now and man is it slowing things down- any painless way to get rid of it?

    I mean besides uninstall, etc…

  • malwarekilla

You can use toolbar cop to get rid of it (do a search for toolbar cop). Also, if you’re using IE you can reset IE and it will remove the toolbar for ya.

    1. Open IE
    2. Click tools
    3. Click Internet Options
    4. Click Advanced
    5. Click Reset
    6. Follow the prompts

    For Mozilla Firefox 3.0 try…

    1. Tools
    2. Options
    3. Main
    5. Manage Add-ons (button at the bottom)

…and there should be an entry for “AVG Security Toolbar” with an option to disable.

Not sure I’ve noticed any performance gain but it gives me back a bit of screen.

    Thanks Dave

I find it absolutely maddening to have all these toolbars loading themselves and filling up my screen- and Yahoo has removed the “uninstall ” option in the pencil menu in their latest toolbar. The last lot installed themselves – 2 of them – when AVG updated – I didn’t see any -do not install- option when they did.

Have successfully got rid of them thanks to your advice!

Malwarekilla or someone else…I have the same issue. By doing what you suggested (going to Int. Options, Advanced, and clicking Reset) completely disable my IE browser? Will I have to reinstall that? I just want to get rid of the stupid AVG/Yahoo toolbar, but I don’t want “Resetting” things to mess with the actual browser or my Google toolbar (that toolbar doesn’t slow me down). Please advise – I’m not at all technical. Thank you.

    Hey guys,
i need to get rid of the Yahoo Search option, as i did the same and didnt see the arrow on an AVG 9.0 installation.
i followed all your instructions above, but nothing removes the yahoo search option.
    im using firefox 3.5.
you know when you double click some text to select in firefox, any text on the a webpage, then right click for the small drop down menu to appear, and i use to be able to then just go down the menu and “select search google” for that word i highlighted: but now it says yahoo instead of google search.
thats what i want to get rid of, the yahoo option
    any help would much appreciated
    cheers and thanks kevin

    Dave:

you have given me a bit of a long overdue geek-asm… thank you.

I am an experienced Internet surfer and I studiously unticked the Yahoo! Toolbar option but AVG disregarded my wish and installed the bar anyway.

This has never happened to me before (ever) and I am giving serious consideration to removing AVG altogether. How can I place my trust in a company (AVG) that that so flagrantly disrespects my choice in the name of profit seeking.

Same thing, ticked do not install Yahoo as my search engine, got it any way.
BAD,BAD, behavior on the part of AVG. Convinced me to use a different virus protection.
If you have tried to access MS SP3 though a search you will find everybody is into this game.

    DAVE!

Thank you – That toolbar was making me crazy and it didn’t occur to me to look under the manage icon tab menu.

If you use firefox, just go to the search window on the righ side of your computert. You will see a icon on the left of the search window, click on the icon and choose Google as your search engine pref… problem solved.

If that does not work, follow this link…it helped me

    Hi John,
Thanks for the advice on the Google Search site. It was a breeze to fix. Glad that AVG Search is gone!
